Squirrel Exclusion and Roof Vent Protection – Toronto
Job Overview
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Structure: Two-story Victorian residential home
Problem: Squirrel activity in attic and roof area
Service: Humane squirrel exclusion and roof vent protection
Visits: Three
Summary
We were contacted regarding early morning attic noises consistent with squirrel activity. A multi-visit exclusion was completed to address confirmed roof vent entry points and reinforce other vulnerable areas. Follow-up visits confirmed the squirrel issue was resolved, with additional findings related to a separate pest concern.
Background / Property Context
The property is a two-story Victorian home with a steeply angled roofline and limited access areas. Due to roof pitch and working-at-heights requirements, the job required two technicians for safe access and installation.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported scratching and movement sounds in the roof and attic during morning hours. They also suspected access near the rear siding and roofline.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our team identified a chewed roof vent consistent with squirrel entry. Several additional roof and wall penetrations were noted as vulnerable, including roof vents, ridge vent sections, and a plumbing vent. No interior damage was documented during the inspection.
Cause Analysis
Squirrels commonly access attics through roof vents and other roofline penetrations, particularly on older homes with complex roof geometry. The steep roof angles and multiple vent penetrations increased exposure risk. Once a primary entry point was established, nearby openings became secondary risk areas.
Treatment / Removal
A humane one-way door was installed over the damaged roof vent, allowing squirrels to exit without re-entry. The door was integrated with a galvanized steel roof vent cover to prevent future access. No animals were handled directly during the process.
Exclusion & Repairs
Additional exclusion work was completed to reinforce the roof system:
- Galvanized steel roof vent covers installed on four additional vents
- Galvanized steel micro-mesh installed along two sections of ridge venting at the roof peak
- Plumbing vent sealed at the base with galvanized steel mesh
- Wall and foundation vents screened where accessible
All materials were mechanically fastened and sealed to withstand weather exposure.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further attic noise. The one-way door was removed, and exclusion work was inspected and confirmed intact.
During a third visit prompted by new reported sounds, no new wildlife entry points were found. The squirrel exclusion remained secure. Further assessment indicated the presence of mice, unrelated to the original squirrel entry, and this was addressed separately.
Technician Notes
The initial inspection and exclusion work were completed by Ardian, with a second technician assisting due to roof pitch and access limitations. All squirrel-related work was completed humanely and without incident. Final inspection confirmed no further squirrel activity and secure exclusion across treated areas.
