Raccoon Chimney Entry – Chimney Exclusion on Attached Victorian Home – Toronto

Job Overview

Location: Toronto, Ontario
Structure: Three-story attached Victorian century home, red brick
Problem: Raccoon activity on roof with suspected chimney entry
Service: Raccoon removal and chimney exclusion
Visits: 2

Summary

Our team addressed raccoon activity originating from a chimney on a high, three-story attached home. Inspection confirmed chimney access despite prior roofline sealing. Humane exclusion was completed using one-way devices appropriate for late baby season, followed by permanent chimney sealing once activity ceased.

Background / Property Context

The property is a tall, attached Victorian home with a steep roofline and multiple roof penetrations. Height and access required working at elevation and coordination between technicians.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported ongoing raccoon noise and movement on the roof and suspected chimney access. The customer had previously completed roof sealing and wanted confirmation and resolution of any remaining entry points.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial inspection, our technicians identified raccoon use of the chimney as the primary access point. No additional active entries were observed along previously sealed roof sections.

Cause Analysis

Chimneys can present accessible vertical openings, particularly on older homes where caps or screens are absent or compromised. Elevated rooflines and adjacent tree cover can increase wildlife access opportunities. Seasonal behavior during late baby season can prolong occupancy if exclusions are not timed correctly.

Treatment / Removal

Humane, non-lethal exclusion was selected. Given the timing in late baby season, a one-way device configuration was used that allowed juveniles to exit independently while preventing the adult from re-entering or manipulating the opening. Work was completed during the first visit by two technicians due to roof height and access requirements.

Exclusion & Repairs

After a period of confirmed inactivity, the one-way device was removed. Chimney openings were permanently sealed with wildlife-resistant screening and covers to prevent future access.

Outcome & Confirmation

On the final visit, the homeowner reported no further activity. All one-way devices were removed, chimney exclusions were inspected, and no additional signs of wildlife presence were observed.

Technician Notes

The initial inspection and exclusion were completed by Richard with assistance due to roof height. Late baby season considerations informed device selection to ensure humane outcomes. Follow-up confirmed successful exclusion with no recurrence.
