Raccoon Removal and Deck Exclusion – Scarborough
Job Overview
Location: Scarborough, Ontario
Structure: Two-story home with brick on the first floor, siding on the second floor, and a large rear deck
Problem: Raccoon activity beneath the deck
Service: Raccoon removal and full deck exclusion
Visits: 2
Summary
Wildlife Shield responded to reports of animal activity beneath a rear deck at a residential property in Scarborough. Inspection confirmed raccoon use of the area. Due to seasonal ground conditions in November, work was scheduled to proceed once the soil was suitable for trenching. Humane eviction and full perimeter exclusion were completed over two visits, with no further activity reported.
Background / Property Context
The property features a raised wooden deck with open ground access along multiple sides. Deck framing and grade-level gaps created sheltered conditions commonly used by burrowing wildlife.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported ongoing animal presence under the deck and requested confirmation of the species and a permanent solution to prevent re-entry.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, tracks and disturbed soil were observed near the deck perimeter. Entry points consistent with raccoon access were identified beneath the deck structure. No signs associated with skunk activity were noted.
Cause Analysis
Decks with open perimeters provide dry, protected space that raccoons commonly use for denning. Seasonal behavior in late fall increases pressure to find shelter. Ground-level gaps without buried barriers allow repeated access beneath structures.
Treatment / Removal
A humane, non-lethal exclusion approach was used. A one-way door was installed at the active burrowing entrance to allow the raccoon to exit while preventing re-entry. This method allowed the animal to vacate the space on its own.
Exclusion & Repairs
Once ground conditions allowed, our team trenched the full accessible perimeter of the deck. Galvanized steel mesh was securely fastened to the deck framing, extended approximately one foot down and six inches outward, and buried to create a permanent underground barrier. Photos show sections of mesh secured with fasteners, trenching around the deck perimeter, and soil backfilled after installation.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the follow-up visit, the homeowner reported no further activity. The one-way door was removed, the entry point was sealed, and the entire exclusion was inspected. No additional wildlife activity was observed or reported after completion.
Technician Notes
The work was completed over two visits due to seasonal soil conditions. Richard carried out the inspection, installation of the one-way door, trenching, and final exclusion inspection. All work was completed safely and in line with humane wildlife control practices.
